Girls Build: Change Agents 2020-2021 Application

Mission Statement:
We are the Change Agents of Compton Early College High School. We are a student organization aimed at inspiring girls to develop into change agents who help others, get involved in community activities, and build the skills necessary for effective leadership. Our focus is collaboration, communication, and community building.

The Change Agents are focused on addressing the needs of Health and Wellness in our school community. By promoting a healthy lifestyle, we hope to empower our peers and eventually inspire the city of Compton. Our vision is to transform Compton Early College High School into a Wellness Center aimed at providing emotional support, stress relief, and an overall safe space for our school community.  Furthermore, we hope to spread the message of wellness throughout the city.

Project Need:
2020 has proven to be an extraordinary year that has led to an extraordinary need to focus on health and wellness in communities of color. As of November 3, 2020, there are currently 4,560 confirmed cases of Novel Coronavirus in Compton, CA. In hopes of addressing and combating the blatant disproportionate rate that COVID-19 is affecting Black and Latinx communities, the Change Agents would like to further explore systems of inequality in health. This quest will include research on health justice, mental health, and environmental health.

Civic Engagement Component:
The Change Agents have always and will continue to be dedicated to civic engagement. This project will allow us to research the policy behind health and environmental justice. The Change Agents are hoping to engage in communication with Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragan, Supervisor Holly Mitchell,  and Mayor Aja  Brown as we attempt to unpack systems that have plagued our city.

Anticipated Outcomes:
One short-term goal is to provide a safe space for students to talk, share, laugh, cry, and be. Mental health is a priority as students are suffering in silence through distance learning and COVID-19. The Change Agents are hoping to host healing circles that provide an outlet for their peers.

Ideally, one long-term goal will include engaging our politicians who can truly affect positive change via legislature. The impact will be planting the seed in an ongoing conversation that includes the youth and constituents of Compton.
