Girls Build: Change Agents 2020-2021 Application
Mission Statement:
We are the Change Agents of Compton Early College High School. We are a student organization aimed at inspiring girls to develop into change agents who help others, get involved in community activities, and build the skills necessary for effective leadership. Our focus is collaboration, communication, and community building.
The Change Agents are focused on addressing the needs of Health and Wellness in our school community. By promoting a healthy lifestyle, we hope to empower our peers and eventually inspire the city of Compton. Our vision is to transform Compton Early College High School into a Wellness Center aimed at providing emotional support, stress relief, and an overall safe space for our school community. Furthermore, we hope to spread the message of wellness throughout the city.
Project Need:
2020 has proven to be an extraordinary year that has led to an extraordinary need to focus on health and wellness in communities of color. As of November 3, 2020, there are currently 4,560 confirmed cases of Novel Coronavirus in Compton, CA. In hopes of addressing and combating the blatant disproportionate rate that COVID-19 is affecting Black and Latinx communities, the Change Agents would like to further explore systems of inequality in health. The quest included research on health justice, mental health, and environmental health.
As the school year continued, we realized that our peers were experiencing loneliness, stress, and exhibiting symptoms of anxiety and depression. Our sense of community compelled us to act. While the district developed a Mental Health Support Line, we wanted to address the specific needs at our school.
Process:
The Change Agents met (on Google Meet) weekly on Tuesdays during lunch. However, when necessary we met weekly and on weekends, if needed.
The team was organized into four central committees: Wellness Wednesdays/Wellness Series Committee, SHEro Series Committee, and Podcast Committee.
All members participated actively during our 2020 General Election campaign in a variety of ways. Members created Tik Tok videos, infographics, researched data, and supported events via promotion, participation, and attendance.

Civic Engagement:
The Change Agents have always and will continue to be dedicated to civic engagement. Throughout the 2020 General Election, the Change Agents partnered with sister organizations, Future Voters at Centennial High School, and Junior States of America at Dominguez High School, to organize the Compton Votes Rally. In addition, in partnership with our school Associated Student Body, we held a virtual Voter Registration event and hosted multiple debate watch parties. We encouraged our peers to be informed and active citizens by promoting and recruiting students for the LA County Student Election Worker Program and we furthered our reach by hosting a school-wide California Student Mock Election.
Outcomes:
Our goal was provide a safe space for our peers, whether that meant being supportive, sharing resources, or hosting events. Our school community, and city at large, suffered disproportionately as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We felt the desperate need to provide relief and community for our peers. We cultivated rich relationships and partnerships with sister organizations Future Voters and Junior States of America at Centennial High School and Dominguez High School, respectively, along with community organization, Yetunde Price Resource Center. We engaged our entire school community through various events, posts, and activities. Our goal this year was to provide community, and though we wish we could have accomplishment more, we succeeded by trying.
Short Term Outcome:
The Change Agents strive to view every posts, infographic, and event as a success. While ultimately we would like to expand our reach, we’re always pleased knowing we reached somebody. Through our 2020 General Election Campaign, we were able to reach our entire school community in one capacity or another. Through Wellness Wednesdays and the SHEro Series, we were able to engage with our Instagram family. On average we received 20-25 likes and countless more views sharing vital information on how to lead a healthy and mindful lifestyle. Though we did not host every event we had hoped or felt like we did enough for our community, we our proud of ourselves based on what we were able to accomplish.
Long Term Outcome:
One long-term goal that we are proudest of came via our 2020 General Election Campaign. For the first time, the Change Agents were able to collaborate with sister organizations from two Compton Unified School District high schools. Hosting the Compton Votes Virtual Rally with Future Voters and Junior States of America was fulfilling and inspiring. We cultivated a relationship that will continue to flourish and we look forward to our next collaborative projects.
In addition to sister organizations, we were able to begin a meaningful partnership with the Yetunde Price Resource Center. While we have worked with the YPRC in the past, we were able to form a strong pilot program we hope to launch on our campus in the Fall 2021. The Wellness Series would not have been possible if it had not been for them believing in our vision and mission. The YPRC helped us to develop a program for 30 of our peers. These relationships and networks will continue grow and we will continue on our mission of spreading the positive message of Health and Wellness in our school community and our city.

Reflection:
This year, the Change Agents set out to assist in the healing of our beloved city following a year of suffering, pain, and loss. However, we also set out to highlight the positive, provide resources, and continue to represent our community.
Borrowing from President Franklin D. Roosevelt New Deal vision of reform, recovery, relief.
Reform
While we had decided to focus on Health & Welness due to the obvious need of 2020, we remained committed to our political activism. We felt compelled to develop a campaign that would inspire individuals to register to vote, become informed, and most importantly vote! Looking back at our campaign, we were able to engage the majority of our members by creating Tik Toks, inforgaraphics, and picture/video series.
Recovery
In an effort to help our peers and city recover, we developed Wellness Wednesdays and SHEro Series. This year was difficult, but through these two campaigns we wanted to share some positivity and love. We felt this was accomplished through the SHEro Series as we highlighted significant women making a positive impact within our community.
Relief
Our peers inspired us this year, and we would not have felt accomplished if we had failed to design a campaign with them in mind. Throughout the year, they were our guide, and finally, with the invaluable support of the YPRC, we developed the Wellness Series
2020-2021 proved to be unprecedented, however, our spirit never waivered, nor did our commitment to our community. Do we wish we could have accomplished more? Yes. Did we have larger dreams for our project? Yes. But in the end, our we proud of ourselves? Yes!
We are the Change Agents, and this year we learned that we are resilient beyond belief, we are committed to our city, and more importantly, we are sisters who will not let each other down.
